The position
: ILRI is recruiting a Research Associate – Dryland Restoration who will assist coordination and implementation of action research with development partners, leading to improved land restoration through adaptive management, focused primarily on Ethiopia.

General: ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.

A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa (Mali, Mozambique and Nigeria) and in South Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand and Vietnam) and East Asia (China). www.ilri.org.

Main duties & responsibilities:

  • Leading the collection and processing of primary field data and secondary data pertaining to the effectiveness and sustainability of land restoration techniques;
  • Assisting with analysis of data in order to develop tools and guidelines for scaling land restoration;
  • Assisting liaison with development partners and communities to maintain relationships;
  • Training partners and communities in implementing studies, including participatory monitoring of the effectiveness of technical approaches to land restoration;
  • Assisting with project logistics related to fieldwork and other activities as necessary; and
  • Assisting with communication of research results to partners and communities.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • A master’s degree in Agriculture, Rural Development or related field

Experience:

  • At least 5 years’ of relevant experience

Required:

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting research with farmers and especially pastoralists
  • Experience collecting field data through surveys and technical measurements
  • Demonstrated experience in working with agricultural development projects or programs
  • Pro-active and detailed-oriented personality who can operate both individually and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication both orally and written in English, Amharic, and Afaan Oromo
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and approaches
  • Willingness to travel and work in possibly in difficult field conditions as necessary

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing agricultural research with farming and herding communities, or managing agricultural development projects or program
  • Demonstrated knowledge on and experience with agricultural systems in both the Ethiopian highlands and pastoral lowland areas of Ethiopia
  • Understanding of the agricultural sector, especially livestock, in Ethiopia

Skills:

  • Excellent Capacity in using STATA and SPSS
  • Basic training and certification and proficiency in appropriate PC use
  • Accuracy in data quality, good understanding of relevant administrative processes
  • Good Interpersonal skills
  • Good Communication skills
  • Good Understanding of networking (LAN and WAN)

Monthly Base Salary: Birr 21,367 (Negotiable depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment:  This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position and the appointment is a fixed term for one year.
