The Growth through Nutrition Activity is a five year, $ 73 million program to provide technical assistance to enhance the nutrition outcomes of USAID and Government of Ethiopia (GOE) activities across sectors; support capacity development to implement the national Nutrition Program; promote and support water, sanitation and hygiene interventions; and support innovative interventions that target the most vulnerable populations to improve nutritional status. This new activity will also support a rigorous learning agenda that will document lessons learned about multi-sectoral nutrition programming.

As part of the consortium PSI will lead the engagement and development of the private sector to support these goals by creating sustainable markets and strengthening  the linkages between the private and public sector. The Technical Advisor of Private Sector Engagement will provide strategic guidance on private sector activities and involvement across the project, including business model development for local WASH enterprises, nutritious food manufacturers and other businesses; as well as the creation of innovative public private partnerships.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Identify, assess, and recommend potential private sector partners for the project and partnership opportunities across health areas; provide technical leadership for the design, formalization, and management of innovative private sector partnerships;
  2. Monitor the investment climate and engage regional and federal governments and other stakeholders in policy dialougue on reforms to enhance the incentive framework for increased private participation
  3. Contribute to consortium efforts to develop strategies to strengthen private sector linkages to scale-up and sustain effective interventions to increase access to safe, diverse, and nutritious foods.
  4. Provide technical expertise to private sector actors, such as the development of business plans and strategies for outreach to the private sector
  5. Participate in landscaping research and throughout the project to identify barriers and opportunities for private sector entry and increased engagement an provide recommendations to strengthen the supply of sanitation and nutrition to low-income consumers, including guidance on distribution, production and sales. Building our capacity to understand the total market systems, address market failures and design interventions that result in sustainable health outcomes at scale.
  6. Contribute to the development of metrics and establishment of a monitoring and evaluation framework for tracking progress for the project, specifically tracking market development among private sector partners.
  7. Engage with relevant government/local partners to effectively foster coordination and partnerships with private sector partners /stakeholders.
  8. Develop pilot and roll out plans in accordance with overall project strategy.
  9. Review and analyze monitoring level data regularly to improve local management and decision-making and to adapt and optimize business models being implemented.
  10. Coordinate with a wide-range of internal and external partners
  11. Provide regular, concise reporting on program activities, including document and sharing key learnings on the  potential to scale identified business models with a private sector perspective.

Qualification & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Business, Management, Economist, Finance or a related field
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the private  sector or providing technical assistanc to improve private sector performance experience in a relevant field such as general business management, sales & marketing, supply chain strengthening, or social entrepreneurship
  • Prior experience with WASH is preferred and private sector development is required
  • Experience with design and implementation of business models in developing countries
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with creative vision and the ability to develop actionable ideas is highly desirable
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; English and Amharic required
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills
