The Position:
 The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) ILRI seeks to recruit a Research Officer – Animal Genetics and Breeding to join the African Chicken Genetic Gains (ACGG) team so as to provide technical support to ILRI’s ACGG team. S/he will be responsible for supporting staff and graduate students with high-quality research to move ACGG activities forward. Additionally, this position will play a significant role in the training and organizing of country ACGG teams in Tanzania, Nigeria, and Ethiopia.

General: ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.

A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa (Mali, Mozambique and Nigeria) and in South Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand and Vietnam) and East Asia (China). www.ilri.org.

Main duties & responsibilities:

  • Reviews literature and legislation relevant to the program;
  • Develop work plans, research questions, project concept notes, and field research guides for National partners in the project countries (Tanzania, Nigeria and Ethiopia);
  • Undertakes high level training on research design, data collection, and implementation for country ACGG teams in Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Nigeria;
  • Manages the development and implementation of group trainings in on-station and on-farm poultry research design and data collection for country ACGG teams in Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Nigeria;
  • Communicates on-farm and on-station research protocols and findings to target audience at regional and country level meetings
  • Contributes to the writing and editing of ACGG Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Compiles, summarizes, documents and publishes research data in to reports, briefs, journal articles, periodicals, discussion papers, magazines and newsletters;
  • Contributes to ACGG’s efforts in strengthening animal genetic gains programs and improving nutritional security;
  • Conducts regular field visits to supervise data collection and follows-up with partners in Nigeria, Tanzania and Ethiopia institutions;
  • Organizes and facilitates project and stakeholders meetings;
  • Provides technical support in breeding and genetics data analysis;
  • Builds the capacity of partners in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Nigeria
  • Compiles regular reports on the state of the project spanning from data summaries, workshop and trip reports, project briefs etc.
  • Other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirement:

Education:

  • MSc in Animal Genetics and Breeding or in related field.

Skills:

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in livestock genetics, breeding, and data analysis;
  • Demonstrated  experience in livestock genetics, breeding, and data analysis;
  • Knowledge in computer applications and software for data management and data analyses;
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods and analyses used in animal genetic improvement programs;
  • Knowledge of the poultry sector and experience in African countries;
  • Experience in facilitation skills
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken;
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem solving skills;
  • Punctuality, intellectual curiosity, willingness to take initiative, multi-tasking, and willingness to work under pressure to meet deadlines;
  • Ability to both take direction and work independently;
  • Collaborative skills and experience in  working with multi-cultural teams;
  • Willingness to travel in and outside of Ethiopia.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years practical animal breeding and genetics experience working on station and farm experiments;
  • Experience in implementing poultry research and/or development activities in in Sub-Saharan African countries.

Duty Station:-Addis Ababa.

Job level:-3A.

Monthly Base Salary:-Birr 30,863 (Negotiable depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)..

Terms of appointment:-This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.
