The government of Ethiopia has launched a national water supply, sanitation & hygiene (WASH)  program 2016. The national one water supply, sanitation and hygiene project (OWNP) will be implemented as a multi-sectoral SWAP involving the water, education, health and finance and economic development sectors as well as the private sectors. In order to maximize the benefits of the sector , the ministry of education has established a program management unit (PMU) which is responsible for the implementation of the water supply, sanitation and hygiene program that is expected to strengthen water supply, sanitation and positive hygiene behavior /practice in primary and secondary schools by building new school latrines and clean water supply as well as rehabilitating the existing latrines and water supply of the school and utilities to effectively manage their water supply and sanitation facilities.

Responsibilities of the technical specialist

  • Supervise and support the new construction and rehabilitation of existing primary and secondary school sanitation and hygiene facilities with consideration of disabled students
  • Establish standards for construction of school sanitation and hygiene facilities
  • Ensure that sanitation and hygiene facilities are provided in schools;
  • Support establishment of WASH clubs in schools (regional education bureau);
  • Incorporate Wash –related subject in school curriculum and activities
  • Through REB appropriate structure facilities the provision of WASH training to teachers and PTA.
  • Submit plans and quarterly, biannual and annual fund utilization and performance reports to the RWCO on time in collaboration with the health sector mobilize school communities. assist regions in harmonizing different implementation modalities (WMP, CMP, NGO or self supply) to conform with program requirement and GOE policies regarding the program CMP, NGO  or self supply ) to conform with program requirement and GOE policies regarding the program organization, preparing consolidated annual WASH plans and budgets, reporting requirement use common monitoring indicators, cost-sharing policies, and technical standards, including water quality standards,


      • The specialist will be responsible to provide technical assistance on:
      • Program planning and management
      • Sector training and capacity building
      • Program monitoring and evaluation,
      • As well as supporting the related activities of the PRMU, PWCO and RWTT in these areas.

Qualification and experience

Educational:- minimum BSC in environmental health or public health or M.SC/MPH in environmental health or public health

Experience:- at least 10 years relevant experience for BSC or 8 years for MSC

Salary:- 11,000 (eleven thousand Ethiopian birr)
