The International Potato Center-Ethiopia (CIP) seeks to recruit a Research Associate to its Emergency Response Project and who will also be a member of CIP Ethiopia office.

The Center: The International Potato Centre (CIP) is an international non-profit agricultural research organization with a global mandate to conduct research on potatoes, sweet potatoes, Andean root and tuber crops, and sustainable management of natural resources. CIP’s vision is to contribute from its areas of expertise to the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in particular those goals that relate to poverty, hunger, child and maternal mortality, and sustainable development. CIP has its headquarters in Lima, Peru with staff and activities in locations across Africa, Asia and Latin America. CIP is a member of the consultative Group for International Agricultural Research, a network of 15 research centers mostly located in the developing world and supported by more than 60 donor members.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Liaises with BoA, and Woreda Office of Agriculture, Das in target Kebeles, Farmer Groups and cooperatives (FGCs), and other partners in SNNPR;

  • In collaboration with BOA finalizes the selection of vulnerable target beneficiary households from the drought affected woredas /kebeles using the set criteria;

  • Ensures coordination of the project activities with the CIP projects in SNNPR in acquisition and distribution of planting  materials to avoid unnecessary overlap and in training activities;

  • Ensures the successful and cost –effective implementation of project activities;

  • Organizes and follows up on procurement and distribution of quality planting material of potato and sweetpotato in a timely manner;

  • Manages project funds in accordance with approved budgets and timelines and facilitates payment requests;

  • Manages the junior accountant on day-to-day activities and authorizes payments up to Birr 1,000 required for day-to-day activities;

  • Contributes to the timely preparation of project action plans, budgets and progress reports

  • Supervises the work of the two assistant agronomists on this project;

  • Performs other management-related activities as requested by the CIP-Ethiopia Project coordinator


  • Involves in the coordination and organization of stakeholders workshops, including consultative, planning and review workshops;

  • In collaboration with the CIP-Ethiopia project manager and the BoA prepares, plans implements identified training courses for relevant stakeholders at various levels, including ToT,

  • Plans and executes procurement and distribution of quality planting materials of potatoand sweetpotato;

  • Provides technical backstopping to partner organizations;

  • Follows up and backstops production of ware potatoes and sweetpotato roots, as well as multiplication of quality planting material of both commodities; 

  • Contributes to project M&E activities, including designing of monitoring tools, regular fieldwork to collect monitoring data and preparation of monitoring reports;

  • Facilitates market linkages of target farmers;

  • Identifies, documents and shares project experiences, successes, challenges and lessons learnt;

  • Performs other duties as required

Minimum Requirements: d

Education :

  • MSc degree in Agriculture (Horticulture)


  • At least 3 years of work experience in agriculture /agricultural development programs involving GO and NGO stakeholders

  • Solid work experience with potato and sweetpotato agronomy, their seed multiplication and production system

  • Solid work experience with potato and sweetpotato agronomy, their seed multiplication and production system


  • Have knowledge of detecting laternt infection of sweetpotato and potato viruses and bacterial wilt disease of potato using ELISA test kits

  • Must have good experience in handling and application of fungicide and pesticide in the field

  • Basic understanding of the insect pests and diseases of sweetpotato and potato, and their management

  • Must be familiar with Microsoft office program (excel, power point, word doc) and data analysis software

  • Previous work experience with NGOs or the private sector

  • Working experience in data management

  • Team worker with staff management experience

  • Problem solving skills and strong results –orientation

  • Proven negotiation and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Capacity to work under pressure with minimum supervision

  • Excellent Amharic and English. Knowledge of other languages in SNNPR is a plus


Duty station: Hawassa

Position level: 2D

Minimum Base salary: Birr 21,367 per month (Negotiable, depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment: This is Nationally Recruited staff (NRS)position, initial appointment is fixed term for nine months.
