The Position: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) ILRI seeks to recruit a National coordinator who will lead Agriculture to Nutrition (ATONU) project activities that are embedded with The African chicken Genetic Gains (ACGG) Project.

The ACGG Project’s aim is to test the productivity of five improved chicked genotypes under smallholder farming conditions in four regions of Ethiopia. The Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), ILRI and other partners are implementing the Agriculture to Nutrition (ATONU): Improving Nutrition Outcomes through Optimized Agriculture Investments project by integrating nutrition-sensitive interventions into the ACGG project, among other activities. The project will answer the question of what agriculture projects and programs in general, and ACGG project in particular, can do to deliver positive nutrition outcomes. ATONU is developing frame works and tools to design, pilot, rigorously evaluate and promote a ragne of nutrition-sensitive interventions (NSIs) that will improve the nutrition of small holder farm families, particularly women of child bearing age and young children in the first 1,000 days, who are the most nutritionally vulnerable. In addition, ATONU provides technical assistance to other agriculture programs that want to deliver positive nutrition outcome.

General: ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.         

A member of the CGIAR consortium working for a food secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa (Mali, Mozambique and Nigeria) and in South Asia (India and Sri Lanka), southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand and Vietnam) and East Asia (China).

Main duties & responsibilities:

  • Act as the ATONU project focal person, linking and managing relationships between the ACGG project (ILRI), FANRPAN and Ethiopian institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR);

  • Provides technical leadership, coordination and guidance to project implementation by partners in the delivery of nutrition –sensititve interventions into the ACGG project under the guidance of ACGG and ATONU management;

  • Oversees the effective implementation of ATONU activities according to the work plan;

  • Ensures provision of identified technical support needs of NSI-implementing staff from Ethiopian institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) for effective implementation of NSIs;

  • Liaises with EIAR as country implementing partner and outsourced service providers to ensure timely delivery of capacity development activities in support of delivery of nutrition –sensitive interventions;

  • Ensures that ATONU NSI-implementing team has necessary information, guidelines, and tools for quality technical implementation;

  • With ATONU management and technical staff, ensures ATONU nutrition objectives and results are accomplished timely and meet expected technical standard;

  • Supports a team of field-based field supervisors, offering them technical leadership, providing strategic direction, and monitoring the performance of individual field staff and delivery of outputs;

  • Provides administrative and logistical support to visiting ATONU and partner staff, in liaison with relevant administrative units in ILRI;

  • Performs other duties as required by ATONU

Minimum Requirement:


  • Master degree in Human Nutrition, public health, community development or other related field, with specific experience in project management and implementation of social behavior change communication


  • At least five years of experience working in development and/or community-based nutrition programs with multiple and diverse partnerships preferred


  • Experience in teamwork and people management skills in a multicultural environment;

  • Excellent communications skills including verbal, written English and presentation skills;

  • Excellent inter – personal skills, leadership skills and a proven networker;

  • Knowledge of computers and database/spreadsheet/ word processing software.

Job level : 3A

Monthly Base salary: Birr 30,863 (Negotiabled depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.
