When caring for your skin it is essential to know and understand your skin type

HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR SKIN TYPE

Know your skin type

When caring for your skin it is essential to know and understand your skin type, as well as remembering that your lifestyle plays a big part in the health of your skin. Good habits like drinking enough water, regular exercise, healthy eating and getting enough sleep all works towards having healthy skin. When you understand your skin type you can care better for it with the right skincare products and lifestyle choices.

There are four general skin types for the skin on your body, namely: Normal, Dry, Oily, and Sensitive. Each of these skin types has its own unique features that need specific skin care products to address a particular concern. The different skin types are not just confined to the face; they can relate to the body as well. With well-suited skin care products, diet and lifestyle choices, you can enjoy healthy skin all over your body.

Normal Skin

Normal skin usually has a healthy, vibrant appearance with clear, blemish-free skin. It is typically not particularly dry or oily nor is it sensitive towards products or extreme temperatures.

Oily Skin

Oily skin is prone to suffer from breakouts and blackheads, and is characterized by a shiny appearance. Oily skin affects more men than women. On the body oily skin is most evident on areas like the back and chest, where minimal to severe breakouts may occur. A lightweight moisturizer like Vaseline aloe soothe will moisturise the skin leaving it feeling light and fresh.

Dry Skin

Dry skin suffers from a lack of moisture and very rarely suffers breakouts due to a lack of sebum. Dry skin can be identified by how easily it burns in the sun and/or if it is has a tight, sometimes itchy feeling after cleansing. Fine facial lines are often visible around the eyes, mouth, forehead and chin, due to dehydration. Dry body skin is most visible on the knees, elbows and hands, and regularly applying a good body lotion is essential to counteract flaky skin.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can affect any part of the body and can make skin feel dry and tight. It tends to suffer from redness, itching and burning and is very sensitive to temperature extremes, sun exposure and alcohol. Strangely enough, one can develop sensitive skin at any stage in life. Sensitive skin cannot tolerate sun exposure and should be cared for with specialized skincare products to avoid negative and painful reactions.
